Weigh-In Results

It's Monday and I'm going to jump right in.  Here is this week's weigh-in result.

This week's winner is Liza at 250.4.  Off by only 1.5 pounds.

Needless to say, I'm not happy with the result.  I lost .1 pounds this week.  I thought this BS with the micro-losses would be over once I started my summer break but I can't seem to move the scale down at a reasonable pace.  I'm frustrated and disheartened.  I wanted to see 249 by the first weigh-in of June.  Here I am in the middle of July still waiting to hit some very close milestones (50 pounds lost at 246, 15% of my body weight lost at 251.6).

I know I shouldn't complain.  A loss is a loss.  But it still stings a little.  I was hoping to have a really good week but I can't seem to make my body do what I want.

In the interest of full disclosure, I lost control a little this weekend.  I had a few meals where I should have stopped eating earlier but I went back for more food.  I need to get control or I'm never going to lose any more weight.

I feel fat.  I feel like I'm failing.  Something needs to change.

  1. You're hardly failing. Look how far you've come! Do you know how hard it is to do what you've accomplished so far? Just keep at it. You can do this!

Have you tried switching up your exercise routine? If you're doing the same thing over and over, your body starts to get used to it, which just makes it harder to get the same results. Try some different exercises. It'll help keep things interesting too.

  2. I agree with Seth. You are hardly failing. Not even a little bit! Sometimes no matter what we do the scale will not cooperate. And sometimes it catches up later with an awesome loss. Just keep focused and it will go down. I remember a few times when it just seemed "stuck" for me. One time I was even working out everyday without fail and eating great and loss nothing over the span of a month. That was a time when I really needed to change up my diet. I did that and it fixed the problem. Hang in there.

  3. Keep a postive mental attitude. That is the only way to get through this. I am going through the same thing myself.

  4. I'm excited I won, but sad that your loss wasn't as big as we all hoped for.

Have you done measurements recently? Like I've said many times before, you don't always see the changes on the scale, but the changes your body makes will speaker louder volumes about what you're accomplishing.

Take your measurements and compare them to last time. If you see a lot of change-you'll know it's more of a displacement of fat/muscle. If you don't see changes, then you know that you've got to work harder, do better with eating and keep trying. Plateau's can be a pain in the butt-in order to move past them you have to change things up for your body to kickstart again.

Keep working hard!! Don't let the illusion of failure get in your way.

You have to remember it took you years to get to the state that you started with. To make this much progress in such a shorter span of time is still something to pat yourself on the back for. And it just shows that you can't give up now. You've worked too hard to give up before you've reached your goals.

    :) Keep smiling.

  5. It's the food. You don't have to stop eating when out with friends, you don't have to severly restrict your kcals, but you do need to start recognizing that "losing control" on the weekends is what's sabotaging your loss. Consistency is key. Special occasions need to be once a month or less, not once a week. A pound is only 3,500 kcal. So, go out with friends, see the family, but do not use it as an excuse. Eat exactly what you want but make sure you're not eating volumes of it.
Diet is actually more important to weight loss, while exercise is more important in the maintenance of that loss.

We're still here for you and you still have time to reach for your goal.

  6. It is helpful for me to make a hardcore plan, if only for a few days...this might jumpstart a change in behavior for you.

  8. Dude, I am goign through the same thing. It's funny, you've lost 15% of your body weight, but it still feels like you're fat. I've lost almost 150 pounds, and I still have fat days...weeks...months. Ugh.

Just keep on keeping on. You can and will do this! Let's see 249 this week! My money's on 249.7.

  9. Hi Andrew - I don't think you're failing at all, but I don't want to pish-posh how you're feeling either. I can understand the way you're feeling. When I work my a** off, naturally it builds up my expectations and when they aren't met, I feel fat and hopelessness starts rearing its ugly head. During these moments, I tell myself that it's all part of the process in getting to my goal.

Really, even though it wasn't the loss you had hoped/expected, you are still losing, but also gaining non-scale victories! For example, getting yourself to the gym! That is a great accomplishment :)

Hang in there :) You will succeed!

  10. hi, i've been reading your blog for a few months now and i think it's totally inspirational.

i know that it's considered a "no-no" to weigh yourself everyday, but ever since i've been losing weight i've weighed myself every day in the morning and i've found it to be incredibly useful (i actually go a step further and graph my progress but that's TOTALLY unnecessary). i do this with the understanding that my day to day is not as important as the overall picture, and i feel that it helps me find patterns with my eating in relation to my weight.

the reason i bring this up is because my body will naturally spike in weight for a day and go back down the day after, so maybe your shrimpy weight loss this week was actually that. i guess weighing yourself every day is a slippery slope if one is prone to obsession, but i say it's been mighty useful for me. keep going, i love your blog!

  11. I also weigh daily, just to learn how my body fluctuates.

I've been at the same weight for 3 weeks and finally this week lost 1.4 lbs. I realized that I wasn't focusing as well as I could, and started (again) watching portion sizes, watching salt, and drinking more pure water. And added 15 minutes to my walking. It worked.

You can do it. Start with portion sizes, and no seconds. That is the best advice I've ever been given.

  12. I just told my mother about what I was reading, and she is amazed. She has tried diets before and remembers how awful and innefective they can be. She is comfortable with herself though, which is the most important thing.
She knows how hard what you are trying to do can be. You have lost 44 pounds. You have lost 15% of your body mass. I cannot even imagine what that would be. A leg,and arm? Most of your intestines? You have, in a healthy and safe and productive way, done something that a billion dollar industry has not been able to get people to do.
You are wonderful and amazing. Never forget that.

  13. Why do we convince ourselves we're failing when, really, we're just struggling? As I wrote this week, the struggles will never go away, just our ability to cope with them get better. You have come so far...as Lydia said, you are wonderful and amazing. 'nuff said.

  14. Don't feel discouraged if the results don't come right away. Just keep looking forward and push. It's important that you keep reminding yourself why you are doing this. Here is a good article about some of The benefits of losing weight. Remember, you can only achieve positive things by losing weight so stick to your plan!
