A little of this, a little of that.

It's no surprise I get frustrated from time to time.  Everybody does.  Tonight I'm feeling particularly frustrated.  I feel like I'm not making the kind of progress I want to make.  It's understandable.  I've been extra stressed lately.  I'm not getting enough sleep.  December is a particularly bad month for losing weight, etc.

I don't want to use excuses though, so let's suffice it to say I'm frustrated.  The scale did go down this week, but I've had a couple days where I just feel like I'm getting fatter.  I don't like those days.

Recently, a friend of mine from college suggested I get a bodybugg or similar device.  I'd love to.  I really would.  But I can't afford to spend that kind of money right now.  I'm basically asking everyone for money this Christmas because I need to pay for my new computer (which should be shipping any day now).  I'm very excited about the computer, but frustrated because it's not what I wanted to be spending money on right now.

So I'm frustrated about that too.

This afternoon something occurred to me.  I may be treading water, but I'm not sinking.  I've managed to hold onto my losses.  Maintenance is still at least 50 pounds away, but considering I've been less than religious in my diet especially, I should be happy that I don't have to re-lose any weight.

  1. Andrew, I think everyone gets frustrated from time to time. I know I do. And I get very discouraged. I have found that reading blogs like yours helps me remember that I can get off my butt and start again. Thank you for sharing.

  2. I hear you on the being frustrated front. Hang in there. I still think you're doing great!

  3. Exercise decreases stress.

So when you're stressed, go to the gym, go for a walk, run up and down your stairs, do some push-ups / sit ups ...sit down and stretch.

Bad food also effects your mental output - if you eat bad, you feel bad.

"Eating crappy food is not a reward-it's a punishment."

Meditating also helps you deal with stress, it calms you, it centers you, it puts you in touch with your body.

I know your goal is to lose weight, make the scale drop. But sometimes when that becomes so frustrating, I think about what I can do to make my body healthy and happy. Which really is what the ultimate goal is for anyone.

:) The holidays are always extra stressful and busy - just don't force yourself to be overwhelmed.

  4. We all go through funks and times of frustration. You're doing the right thing. Don't make excuses for yourself and get back to doing what has gotten you this far as soon as possible. I'm just coming out of a month long funk but I kept moving in the right direction. Not as quickly as I had been but I didn't go backwards. Forward progression is a success especially when a huge weight is on you...no pun intended...lol

  5. I heard an interesting thing on NPR about how our brain keeps our weight stagnant which is why its so hard to lose/gain weight. Your brain is adjusting to needing fewer calories and whatnot. but soon, if I move in, I will be your personal trainer.

  6. I totally understand this. Maintaining might suck when you still have a good ways to go, but you aren't gaining! You aren't going backwards! So basically you are still doing great! :)
