Weigh-In Results

I'm sick.  Ugh.  I took the day off of work and feel like I'm wallowing in my own filth.  I hate this crap.  I've been eating loads of chicken noodle soup and drinking lots of Gatorade.  I'm boated and gross.

Claire, on the other hand, feels like she's lost five pounds blowing her nose today.

Let's see the results.

This scale reading makes me want to cry.  I worked my ass off every day for 21 days without fail and I end up gaining 8.2 pounds.  I feel like I'm letting myself down.  I feel like I'm letting you down.  This makes it abundantly clear that while exercise has brought me a long way and is a vital part of my weight loss strategy, it is not the only solution to my problem. Next Monday I'm going to start counting calories for 3 weeks straight.  I've never made it that long counting calories, so I'm going to give it the old college try.  Of course, it took me 6 years to get my BA, but I did it.

On the plus side, I finished my 21 day challenge yesterday.  20 days of gym visits and 20 flights of stairs yesterday.  I have a victory under my belt now.  Despite a hefty gain this week, I have a trophy I can put on the shelf.  I'm going to keep at it 4 to 6 days a week.  I'm also going to keep working on upping the intensity level of my workouts.  Hopefully, I'll get to a point where I do at least 5k on the treadmill at least three times a week.

This isn't over.  I'm going to lose 100 pounds.  I'm going to be healthy.

  1. You should be proud of yourself for exercising everyday! It'll show on the scale eventually, just don't give up! :)

  2. You're sick; the body can have the tendency to hold quite a bit of water under stress, whether it's illness or muscle trauma.

In early December I wiped out on a Skki Trikke and messed my shoulder up. The pain was enough to get me a major scrip for Vicodin...and 2 days later my weight was up over 8 pounds. All water, all from trauma.

    It happens.

Don't worry too much about it. Just rest up and feel better, and don't be surprised if once you are feeling better you spend a few days peeing your brains out...

  3. I've heard that weight loss is more about restricting calories than exercising, anyway. Maybe you'll have better luck with counting calories!

  4. Chicken soup and Gatorade are loaded with salt. Start drinking a ton of water and I bet you''ll see those lbs drop off fast, and all that exercise running back and forth to the bathroom won't hurt either. Feel better soon!

  5. Please don't give up! I'll bet a good portion of that weight gain is water from all the Gatorade & soup. And don't forget that a big burst of intense exercise will make you retain water because your stressed muscles will hold onto water for a while. I do think that counting calories (or Points!) is a good idea because it gives you an idea of exactly how much you're eating. Exercise + calorie counting = success!

  6. I agree with Kathy. Heavy salt intake = water retention = weight increase. So this means next week you're almost guaranteed a loss?? ;-)

Tracking calories is half the battle to weight loss (and weight management), I think you've put off the effort long enough.

I find that a larger, yet reasonable sized lunch with a relative larger afternoon snack and a smaller dinner helps me from over eating at home. And a lot of water. You can never get enough water!

Have you done measurements lately? All that exercise could be building muscle...And think about how your clothes have been fitting - if you don't see the loss on the scale, but see your clothes getting a little baggier, your body is just changing the muscle / fat ratio.

Good luck on your next challenge!!

  7. The scale is only one small part of it. There are sooo many internal changes going on that you can't possibly measure... Believe me, been there!!
Maybe revisit your food and exercise and see if anywhere you may be able to change up a bit to help. But you're definitely pointed in the right direction, keep going!!!

  8. Man, it sucks being sick. I'm sure as you get feeling better you can up that intensity, and therefore see the losses again. Cheers, Rick
