It Starts Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of my life.  Tomorrow is the day I step back on the scale and gear up to take another big chunk out of the fat I've been carrying around with me.

In 2011 I want to meet my goal of losing 100 pounds (from a starting weight of 296).  I'm not big on new year's resolutions, but this is a good time to get back on the horse.

How will you accomplish this?  you might ask.

I've got a strategy.

Phase 1:  Go to the gym every day for the next three weeks.  It takes three weeks to establish something as a habit.

Phase 2:  Track my intake every day for three weeks.  This is probably the single most helpful thing you can do to lose weight.

Phase 3:  Drink 64 or more ounces of water every day for three weeks.

I'm thinking I'll do one phase each month but I may feel ambitious and start phase 2 as soon as I finish phase 1.

I'll still be weighing myself once a week, but on the first Monday of each month, I'll do measurements too.

What else should I be doing?  What has helped you lose weight?  What's your goal for 2011?  How will you accomplish it?

And now, I'm heading to the gym.  Time to kick some ass in 2011.

  1. My suggestions: I would aim to go to the gym 3-4 times a week, track everything you eat and drink and times, and what you were feeling for a week (then examine it), and finally drink WAY MORE THAN 64 oz... I drink over 100 oz a day!

    Good luck!

  2. I'm with you on this one, Andrew. I'm heading back to the gym tomorrow as well. My goal for this year is to lose at least 75 lbs. I'll accomplish this by pretty much the same methods you've outlined but I find it difficult (schedule-wise) to make it to the gym 7 days a week. I will make it to the gym 3 days a week. The other 3 days I will work out at home, and take one day per week to rest. I'll also be tracking what I'm eating and putting my new mug to good use. I'll be keeping my eye on you.

I'm simply not taking any excuses from myself anymore.

  3. Happy New Year Andrew!
Good for you for deciding to get back on that horse. 2010 wasn't quite the year I expected it to be, but the important thing is to never give up. I've had a little setback from December but I've fought too hard for too long to let myself go back to where I was.
Stay focussed, you're spot on with record keeping ... I fine it makes a huge difference.
I'm looking forward to watching your progress.
Remember ... 2011 will be YOUR year to do this!
    All the best....

  5. My goal is to lose no less than 50 pounds this year. I'm definitely getting back to swimming because it worked so well in the past; great cardio and easy on my joints. I'm also getting back to biking and planning on doing 30daysofbiking in April...it would be AWESOME if you would join us, just look it up on facebook!!!

  6. 2010 was a good year for me - I lost 29 pounds and I plan on losing another 25 in 2011. I believe that the only way to successfully lose weight is to do it slowly. Lifestyle change is the key - eat plently of fresh fruits and veggies; carbs and fat are not as bad as one thinks - you just need to choose the right ones. Stay active and get plenty of fresh air!

  7. I have about 100+ to go as well. I am down 60 lbs. I do an hour (at least) of exercise most days of the week...a DVD. It's become a habit, which is awesome!LOL Still don't eat as good as I should, but working on it. I started out at 350 and now weigh about 290. Not sure what I would like to get down to, but for now, I'm taking it 5 lbs. at a time. Good luck on your weight loss!!:)
